Hope UMC has participated in the Michigan Department of Transport (MDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program since the spring of 2018. We were recently commended for our service by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Nice work Hope UMC!!!

The stretch of highway that we clean is about 2.1 miles long.  It is on M30.  It extends north from the MDOT Park ‘N Ride just north of the US 10 roundabout to the intersection of M30 and E Mier Road.

As a participant in the program, we clean our section of highway three times a year on dates determined by MDOT.

The cleaning that we do consists of picking up highway litter, bagging it in MDOT trash bags and leaving the bags by the roadside to be picked up by MDOT.

Over the past several years we have split our assigned stretch of highway into four sections, as follows:

  • West side of M30 from the intersection of M 30 and E Mier Road, going south to M30 and W Blakely Road:
  • East side of M30 from the intersection of M 30 and E Mier Road, going south to M30 and W Blakely Road: and
  • East side of M30 from the intersection of M 30 and W Blakely Road, going south to the MDOT parking lot that is north of the traffic circle.

We do not pickup anything other than lightweight litter.  Heavy items such as tires, batteries, propane tanks and gas cylinders are noted but not handled.

Safety vests must be worn.  If you wish to retain your safety vest as a souvenir, you are welcome to do so.

Refreshments are usually served at the church on completion of our cleaning.

You are encouraged to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program as it is run at Hope UMC.  There is good fellowship and a sense of satisfaction in doing so.
